Mauritian scientists, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the first woman to be the President of the Republic, has been honoured on the international platform again as a fellow scientist named a new mollusc species after her.
Our favourite local scientist, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, is in international news again. Her name has been given to a new species of mollusc discovered by scientist Jesus Ortega in the waters of Guadeloupe. The creature hailing from the mollusc genus Volvarina has been named Volvarina guribae. Volvarina comprises small sea snails of the family Marginellidae.
The following depicts Volvarina species discovered in the past:-
J. Ortega intended to honour the women recipient of the l’Oréal-UNESCO award. The award was given to Ameenah Gurib-Fakim back in 2007 for the region of Africa and Arab States rewarding her for her research work on the plants of Mauritius and their biomedical application.
Gurib-Fakim is thrilled to share her name with a documented species and thus being immortalised in science.
