Construction of World’s Most Powerful Digital Camera To Complement Most Powerful Telescope

The world’s most powerful digital camera will soon be constructed. It is being described as the “eye” of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) in Chile.

The US Department of Energy approved of the project this week. The setting up of the camera can thus start. The LSST is itself the most powerful telescope on our planet soon to capture images at 3.2 gigapixels.

The LSST is scheduled to take digital images of the whole visible southern sky in 2022 from the peak of Cerro Pachón mountain in Chile. It is expected to be the means for the greatest night sky observation humanity has ever made: thus tens of millions of heavenly bodies will be captured in high-resolution images.

Furthermore, the camera will consist of several types of filters that will allow it to view varying wavelengths of light (from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared). Hopefully, dark matter and dark energy will be documented in a more in-depth manner.

To better understand how good the digital camera will be, know that it will require 1,500 high-definition TVs to display one of its images.
